I first came across this idea in Canada where people often have large basements and living rooms. They get together by paying a certain amount of money each and then booking an act for the evening. This site shows you how they are organised in America;-
I went to a few of these concerts and thoroughly enjoyed them - so why shouldn't we do it in Europe?
I have met many talented musicians on my travels and know that they find it hard to find work, they play for free at 'Open Mic' sessions and for many it ends there.
OK so we might not have huge living areas but how about 20 people getting together, paying £5 each, and booking an act in need of the experience? £100 is not a massive fee but it's a start, and it's a win/win situation too as the host has a unique event, the audience is not paying theatre prices, the artist has a chance to 'showcase' his or her material in front of a listening audience, and everyone is happy.
You can expect 2 X 45minutes of entertainment - some artist may give you more but you shouldn't expect it.
If transport is a problem you might be asked for a bed for the
night and a bit of supper but hey ... that's not the end of the world
either!
All you need to do is go to a local 'Open Mic' session and see who is around. If you're not sure about an act, ask the organiser, they will usually know whether an act is able to cope with a full evening in front of an audience. I'm sure that you will enjoy the results.
Just about all the artists on the Whaley Water Weekend 'mini fest' were able to give a full evening of entertainment - if you saw the show and would like more details of any of the acts please let me know and I'll put you in touch.
Of course you can also book professional musicians it's easy to find them and make enquiries via their web sites and some are already listed with the web site above.
